Manchester United Weigh Up Options as Pressure Builds on Carrick
Manchester United's sluggish start to the season has intensified speculation over the future of head coach Michael Carrick, with a host of high-profile names already being discussed as potential replacements should the club decide to make a change.
United have collected just six points from their opening six Premier League fixtures this term and have managed only a single win from their first two Champions League group outings, results that have left supporters and pundits questioning the direction of the team. While sources close to the club maintain there is no immediate intention to part ways with Carrick, speculation over his successor has gathered momentum, with one reported target said to have already expressed interest in the position.
Among the frontrunners is Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle United earlier this year after a successful spell on Tyneside. United are understood to have long admired Howe, having considered him as a candidate when Erik ten Hag was dismissed in 2024. According to reports in the Daily Telegraph, Howe — after stepping back from the game to spend time with family — is now open to taking on a major rebuilding project at a historically significant club, a description that fits Old Trafford's current situation.
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has also emerged as what The Sun describes as the "standout" candidate. The 33-year-old German was reportedly in the frame last year when United were deciding on a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim, before Carrick was eventually given the job full-time. Despite his youth — he would be younger than three current members of the United squad — Hürzeler's impressive body of work at Brighton has made him difficult to overlook.
Antonio Conte, who departed Napoli earlier this year, is another name under consideration. The Italian, a Premier League title winner with Chelsea and a five-time Serie A champion as a player, has made no secret of his ambitions in recent media appearances. Speaking to The Athletic last month, Conte hinted at his interest in reviving a fallen giant, saying: "I'd like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more." TalkSport has since reported that Conte's representatives have been in contact with United to gauge interest in the role should a vacancy arise.
Julian Nagelsmann, who left his position as Germany head coach following a surprise World Cup exit to Paraguay, is also said to be under serious consideration. According to TalkSport journalist Ben Jacobs, Nagelsmann ranks highly on United's list of candidates and is understood to be favored by the club's sporting figure Christopher Vivell.
Former Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, who guided the Tractor Boys to back-to-back promotions before stepping away from management at the end of last season, has similarly been linked with a return to Old Trafford, where he previously worked as a coach. Having taken time off after his first senior managerial role, McKenna could be tempted by the opportunity to return to a familiar environment.
A more unexpected name floated in connection with the vacancy is Cesc Fàbregas, the former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder now managing Como in Serie A. Although he remains contracted to the Italian club until 2028 and is not believed to be actively seeking a Premier League return, Fàbregas is reportedly held in high regard by United's hierarchy.
For now, Carrick remains in charge, but with results failing to improve, the names circulating around Old Trafford suggest the club is prepared for multiple scenarios should a managerial change become necessary.
