Mudryk Spotted at Stamford Bridge as Shakhtar Donetsk Stage Champions League Clash in London
Mykhailo Mudryk made an appearance at Stamford Bridge this week, though not in Chelsea colours, as he watched his former club Shakhtar Donetsk host a Champions League fixture at his old stomping ground while continuing his recovery from injury.
The Ukrainian forward, currently on a season-long loan at Tottenham Hotspur, has not featured in a competitive match for the Blues in almost two years. He was present in the stands as Shakhtar came from behind to defeat AEK Athens, in a game that drew an impressive crowd of 29,144. Also among the spectators was Andriy Shevchenko, the former Chelsea striker who now serves as president of the Ukrainian Football Association.
Shakhtar have been unable to play home matches at their Donbas Arena in Donetsk since 2014, and the situation worsened following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, forcing the club to stage European home fixtures in a series of neutral venues across Poland, Germany and Slovenia. This season, in an effort to cut down on travel demands, the club pushed to relocate their Champions League home games to London, having also explored the possibility of using Fulham's or Brentford's grounds before settling on Stamford Bridge.
The choice of London carries added significance given the city's substantial Ukrainian refugee community, which turned out in strong numbers to support the club. Shakhtar are hoping to maintain an average attendance of around 30,000 across their four fixtures at the 40,044-capacity stadium, with matches against Sporting, Fenerbahce and Real Madrid still to come this season.
For Mudryk, the visit came during a difficult period in his fledgling Tottenham career. The 25-year-old joined Spurs in a surprise Deadline Day move over the summer, reuniting with manager Roberto De Zerbi, his former boss at Shakhtar, alongside fellow new arrival Tosin Adarabioyo. The switch followed the resolution of Mudryk's anti-doping disciplinary case with the Football Association, which had cleared him to resume playing with immediate effect.
His start in north London, however, has been hampered by fitness problems. After making his debut as a substitute against Nottingham Forest, Mudryk suffered ankle ligament damage in training just days later and has been sidelined since the beginning of September. His recovery means he will not be fit to face his parent club when Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge next Saturday for the Premier League encounter - and in any case, loan rules would render him ineligible to play against Chelsea even if he had recovered in time.
The winger's spell on loan was supposed to offer him a fresh start and regular football after becoming a peripheral figure under Chelsea's rotating cast of managers since his high-profile move from Shakhtar in January 2023. Instead, injury has delayed his Tottenham bow, leaving him watching from the sidelines - literally, in this case, as he took in Shakhtar's European night in familiar surroundings.
With De Zerbi keen to integrate him into his system once fit, Spurs will be eager for Mudryk to return to full training soon. In the meantime, Shakhtar's continued use of Stamford Bridge offers a symbolic bridge between his past and present clubs, even as he remains unable to contribute on the pitch for either side in the near term.
