Barcola Hat-Trick Headlines Liverpool's Dominant Rout of LASK as Iraola Praises Front Three
Liverpool continued their flawless start to this season's Champions League campaign with an emphatic away victory over LASK in Austria, with Bradley Barcola stealing the headlines by scoring his first-ever Champions League hat-trick. The Reds ran riot, with Jeremie Frimpong, Lewis Koumas and Ronald Araujo also finding the net in a six-goal demolition that further strengthened Liverpool's position in Europe.
Manager Andoni Iraola made wholesale changes to his starting lineup for the trip to Austria, and the gamble paid off handsomely. Among those given a chance to impress was Florian Wirtz, who delivered one of his most convincing performances since arriving at the club, pulling the strings in midfield and helping Liverpool dictate the tempo of the match.
Speaking after the final whistle, Iraola was full of praise for both Barcola and Wirtz, highlighting how the pair combined to unlock LASK's defense throughout the contest. "I am really happy for Bradley. I think both he and Wirtz played really well today and made a difference," Iraola said. "Bradley was always a threat one-v-one and in behind. Flo helped us a lot to control the game, finding the pockets, I'm happy for both of them."
The Spanish coach also broke down the tactical approach that allowed his side to dominate from start to finish, noting how Liverpool exploited gaps in LASK's defensive setup. "I think we attacked really well, especially in the first half. I think the defence was in a very compact block, there were small spaces in between, and we found good spaces in the pockets with the three players up front," he explained. "The second half was more about exploiting the spaces. I think offensively, it was a very complete game."
Barcola's treble was the standout individual contribution of the night, and Iraola was quick to acknowledge the magnitude of the achievement when asked for a message to his forward. "I think he has to enjoy this. Scoring a hat trick in the Champions League is very difficult," the manager said. He also revealed he had sensed Barcola was building toward a big performance even before kickoff. "Even yesterday I could feel he was very lively, you feel these things. I didn't know how he would play the next day, but it wasn't a big surprise because you could feel he was in a good place."
Despite the lopsided scoreline, not everything went entirely to plan behind the scenes. Iraola admitted he had been hoping to rotate both of his starting centre-backs but was unable to do so fully. Jeremy Jacquet, who had started alongside Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool's recent clash with Manchester City, was again named in the back line, this time partnered by Araujo, who stepped in for the suspended or rested Liverpool captain.
Asked to explain the decision, Iraola pointed to the risks of changing an entire central defensive pairing at once, as well as the demands of an upcoming fixture. "I think there is a reason why you never change both centre-backs together. It is difficult, a new pair comes," he said. "But obviously, you have to start thinking about the next game. We play in three days against Brentford away. I think Ron and Jeremy were players that have been demanded lately, have played a lot of games with us and the national team. This seemed the right moment to give them rest, but thinking about today's game, it did not seem like the right thing to change both centre-backs."
With the comprehensive win in the books, Liverpool's attention now turns quickly to their Premier League assignment against Brentford, as Iraola looks to manage his squad's workload while maintaining the momentum built during this impressive European run.
